Background

“Menstrual Hygiene Management among Girls Between 10-16 years of Age in School” is a project that aims to create sustainable solutions, improve access to sanitation services, facilitate and address the information needs of young girls on menstrual hygiene and health, linking them to healthcare services for the treatment of UTI and genital infection and related ailments and the safe disposal of menstrual waste during school days. This is because many girls drop out of school due to a lack of proper facilities for managing menstrual periods adequately while at school since most of these young girls come from very poor families.

Specific Objectives of the Project

  • To build an enabling environment so that the girls feel supported and comforted in schools to encourage them to study.
  • To increase the capacity of selected schools to effectively manage and sustain menstrual hygiene and sanitation practices to create a conducive environment for girls

Activities:

Constructions of a Washroom

Ywide is constructing a washroom for the adolescent girls in Angaya Primary School to provide a proper facility for adequate management of menstrual periods for girls while at school since most of these young girls come from very poor families.

Menstrual Health Education

This activity targets over 100 adolescent girls and more than 200 young girls in Angaya Primary School through intensive Menstrual Health Management sessions conducted by a government-registered midwife or nurse, health screening camps, provision of sanitary materials throughout the project period, day celebration, IEC development, etc.

Capacity Development

The capacity of the existing Girls Leadership Club which was established by “End Child Marriage and Teenage Pregnancy in Gulu District and being funded by Girls First Fund is being strengthened through “Menstrual Hygiene Management among Girls of Between 10-16 years of Age in School project” to enable it take forward the initiative to educate other pupils on menstrual health and spread awareness among other young and adolescent girls to be able to sustain this intervention. This project is designed to provide training to enable them to make for themselves reusable sanitary pads. The activity reaches out to the larger community through family and peer groups on issues relating to safe menstrual hygiene behavior.

reusable pads making

Empowering young girls by providing hands-on training in making reusable sanitary pads. This initiative aims to address menstrual hygiene challenges faced by girls in rural and semi-urban areas, helping them stay in school and gain valuable vocational skills. By teaching girls to create their own pads, YWIDE promotes sustainability, health, and self-sufficiency. Furthermore, YWIDE collaborates with schools and community organizations to expand the reach of this program, ensuring that more girls have access to this vital training. By equipping young girls with the skills to produce reusable pads, YWIDE not only fosters practical knowledge but also builds confidence and independence among the participants.
